Differentiating Sexual Therapeutic Modalities

Updated: Jun 27, 2021

When enlisting the help of a Sex Industry worker, where does one start? Who should you seek out for the specific support you need?

The choice is yours. I have provided a helpful breakdown of each major Sexual Therapeutic Service out there to help you make a more informed decision on your behalf.

SEX EDUCATOR

In general, sex educators give their clients information about sex. It could be information about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or reproduction, etc. Sex education helps people gain the information, skills, and motivation to make healthy decisions about sex and sexuality. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest provider of sex education , reaching 1.2 million people a year.

Sex education may take place in schools, in community settings, or online. Comprehensive sexuality education refers to K-12 programs that cover a broad range of topics related to:

- Human Development including reproduction, puberty, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

- Relationships including families, friendships, romantic relationships, and dating.

- Personal Skills including communication, negotiation, and decision-making.

- Sexual Behavior including abstinence and sexuality throughout life.

- Sexual Health including sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, and pregnancy.

- Society and Culture including gender roles, diversity, and sexuality in the media.

SEX THERAPIST

A Sex Therapist has either a MA in Marriage and Family Therapy, or a PsyD or Ph.D to be a licensed therapist. Traditional sex therapy often focuses on sexuality from a medical or dysfunction-based viewpoint. Sex therapy usually ends when things are “OK” and rarely shoots for great, mind-blowing, or out of this world sex. Often, in traditional therapy or coaching, problem resolution takes a long time and rarely goes into enhancement or expansion around sexuality. Many Sex Therapists resort to using books and videos to teach their clients the information they are seeking.

TANTRA/SACRED SEXUALITY PRACTITIONER

Tantra is a three-phase spiritual path that takes years to master. Tantra is an ancient Indian practice that dates back more than 5,000 years. Buddhists and Hindus refer to it as a “weaving” of the physical with the spiritual. This practice brings together spirituality and sexuality and emphasizes the importance of intimacy during a sexual experience. However, tantra isn’t just about sexual pleasure. It’s more about celebrating your body and feeling

heightened sensuality. The practice intertwines spirituality, sexuality, and a state of mindfulness. It encourages a sensual experience that may be experienced alone or with a partner. The goal of tantric sex is to achieve spiritual or energetic contact during a sensual experience. This practice is slow and the aim is not always to achieve orgasm. Instead, it’s about feeling a connection either to your partner or to yourself that’s both intense and enlightened. It includes breathing, sounds, and movements to activate sexual energy.

SEXOLOGICAL BODYWORKER

The goal of Sexological Bodyworkers is to help their clients get in touch with their own sexuality through one-way Bodyworker to client sensual massage and breathwork. The client can be naked in the session.

SEXUAL SURROGATE

A sexual surrogate generally works with clients who have relatively challenging, functional or sexual issues. Sexual Surrogates work as part of a sex therapy team and must be referred by a psychotherapist. Sexual Surrogates have both clothed and naked sessions with their clients and engage in kissing as well as oral and genital sex with their clients.

SEX COACH

Sex Coaches are highly trained experts in the field of sexuality and sexual empowerment, as much of your confidence and sense of self is found there. Sex Coaches guide others through transformative Self-Mastery using EXPERIENTIAL PRACTICES in and around sexual connections and relationships, INCLUDING some of the modalities listed above.

For example, some may offer EXPERIENTIAL programs or courses on:

- Tantric/Sacred Sex

- Passion

- Sexual Pleasure

- Enhancement and Expansion of Embodying Your Sexuality

- Sexual Wounds/Trauma

- Sexual Challenges & Disfunction

- Effective Relational Communication

- Shedding Sexual Shame

- Sex Education

- And much, much more!!
